Summer Research Project #1

Summer Research Project #1

Due July 11th

First, watch the video below. Once finished, begin your research on an invention and inventor of your choice. Be sure to find as much information as possible, and then write an essay. Be sure to include as much information as possible and to include an introduction, body, and a conclusion. When you are done, post your essay in the comments below this post.

Remember, you need to complete at least 3 out of 4 projects this summer to get the reward of LASERTRON at the end of the summer! :)

Amelia Earhart was very famous, you're right. She was also a pioneer and an inspiration to a lot of women during the early 1900s, as she was proving that women could do anything they wanted, just like men.

Hope you are having a good summer!
Check back next Monday for the next video task!!

  2. The inventor of the radio. And about music his name was Nikola tesla. And Guglielmo Marconi there were to of the inventers . The music business was once an industry where producers, songwriters and artists used to be siloed within their own core competencies. As such, there were clearly defined expectations and requirements that had to be met in order for someone to take on these titles. To our benefit, these lines got a bit blurred in the 50 and 60s. However since that time, with the dwindling of funds for music education in our public schools, we now have artists calling themselves songwriters with little knowledge of music theory, composition or song structure or appreciation for styles that came before (to our detriment). The MP3 format which made music truly portable also cheapened it by lessening the fidelity and hence the overall experience. Granted, we have reached a wonderful age where music can now fly thru the air and into our cellphones and music players. Further, we can literally carry a library of our favorite music in our back pocket to be made available anytime, anywhere "on tap". However, in its current format, MP3s sound tinny when listened to over an extended period of time. The format sounds even worse coming from most computers (MySpace's music player serves as a prime example of how absurdly degraded the sound can get). And so it's time to improve our delivery and storage systems in order to create the infrastructure to improve the digital audio format (either back to WAV or something better). And now we would not have music in the car or on mp3 players or phones and because he made the radio we have music every ware.

This is very interesting information that you found about the inventor of the radio, and the evolution of music. Please make sure you are putting everything that you find into your own words. :)

I hope you are having a good summer.

  3. Alexander Graham Bell was born on March3,1847 in Edinburgh Scotland. He was home schooled by his professor father.
He first became interested in science of sound because his mother and wife were deaf. He wanted to send voice sound.
He was able to get some funding and hired an assistant Thomas Watson. They together came up with the telephone. On March 10,1876 the first words were Mr. Watson come here I want to see you.
Bell had to race to the patent office to get his patent.
He formed the Bell telephone Company in 1877. This company is known today as AT&T.
This invention lead to other inventions.

This is extremely interesting information. I had no idea that this was the reason why Alexander Graham Bell created the telephone. You make a very good point with your last sentence, "this invention led to many other inventions." This is true of a lot of things; we would never have the computer like we see it today if it were not for a lot of other inventions that came before it.

      Good Job, Colin!

  4. The inventor Ole Kirk Christianian was the inventor of the Lego product. He was born in Denmark on April 7, 1891. The name Lego comes from the Danish phrase 'leg godt' which means "play well". In 1932 he started making Legos out of wood. Imagine that Legos made of wood! Nowadays every one is used to plastic not wood. Well in 1947 he decided to start to make Legos out of plastic. And that's what every one is used to and I am pretty sure the material won't change again.

The type of plastic used is acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and it's pretty strong. Legos are made by first heating it to 450oF. Then it is injected into a mold that has a pressure level between 25 and 150 tons!! Imagine that! And then it only takes approximately 15 SECONDS to cool! And the only current places they are molded in is Billund, Denmark, Nyiregyhaza, Hungary and finally Monterrey, Mexico.

Legos are so popular that around the world there have been 6 or 7 Lego land theme parks around the world. The original is in Denmark; there is also one in Winterhaven, Florida (I have been this one);Germany, Belgium and other places.

In conclusion, I am very happy that Mr. Christianian made the product Lego about 80 years ago or else I would be bored out of my mind this summer. THANK YOU Ole!! :)

First of all, I hope you're having a great summer so far! :)

I am so intrigued by the history of Legos. I learned so much from your essay, including the fact that Lego is a Danish word that means "Play Well." That is a perfect name for such a popular toy.

I have never been to the Lego theme park, but I think it would be a lot of fun to go there, especially those in other countries.

Legos today are so detailed, with so many different kits. I wonder if Mr. Christianan ever pictured his toy becoming so popular, with so many improvements.

Thank you for sharing this information with us, Wyatt!

Check back on Monday of next week for the next project...I think you will enjoy that project, too!

  5. My research was on the Wright brothers. I chose them because they were the first people to invent the airplane we all know now. Wilbur and Orville were the youngest boys in there family. They were so interested in flying things. They made a flying toy and they named it the "bat". They made it out of a bamboo stick, a rubber band, and a pair of paper wings at each end.

When they got older they worked in a bicicyle shop where they sold bikes and fixed bikes.they thought that instead of working for other people they could start there own buisness and make more money.

They eventully used wind tunnels to test their model airplanes. When they tested long enough they decided to take it a step farther and fly it them selves not in a wind tunnel. In 1901 August 9th, Wilbur tried to turn the airplane and it crashed into the ground, nose first.

Two years later, Wilbur and Orville built an airplane with wings and an engine and it worked perfectly. If they haven't envented an airplane we would have to drive every where and it would take much longer to drive than to fly in an airplane.

Hope you're having a good break so far! Tell the rest of your family I say "Hi."

Wilbur and Orville did great things...and you're correct, we may not be where we are today in terms of planes and flying if it were not for those two.

I have seen a lot of pictures of the Wright brothers testing their planes outside, and many times failing, but I actually did not know that they used wind tunnels to test their planes. You learn something new every day!

When I learned about these two brothers in school, I remember thinking what dedication and perseverance they showed. Definitely helps you learn to never give up!

Good job with this essay, Brooke!
Check back on Monday for the next project! It's about short films! You will even get to watch a couple of them! :)

  6. Solar panels
Solar panels are a great way to get heat up your home. The way it happens is that once heat from the sun hits a window or something thats glass it gets hot then the sun shines through and creates heat.if your cold or something a good way to warm up is to go outside and stand in the sun then in a couple seconds you will warm up from the suns heat. Dowm below you will dicover who invented and came up with the idea of solar panels and why your house or where ever your at warms up. So have fun exploring the invention of the solar panels.
The romans were the first people of coming up with the idea of making power from the sun, but they did not invent the technigue of the soar panel they took the idea os the sun because the sun is hot and brings heat.Windows are made of glass when the sun hits it the flow of the heat heats up there home or where ever you are at at that moment but in a building. In the year 1776 there was another envention and finally the very first kind of solar panel was built. it was built by a friendly nice man named Horace de saussure.the first solar oanel was built in the shape of a cone or a triangle.there was another interest devolped from the research community but in the later years of the 19th century they were seeking the sourses of engry in order to reduce the burden posed. For the next 50 to 60 years the soloar panel did not gain muchmomentun. The sun has beem a sourse of energy since the ancient times.the sun has an excellent way of bringing heat into your home and into my home.
If your cold or freezing go in the sunlight from something that is glass and you will warm up in seconds, or if you dont have windows whitch i bet you have at least one go out side and stand in the sun. I think the sun is a great way towarm up your home. The romans really did have a great idea, and Horace de saussure did an outstanding job for inventing the first solar panel shaped like a cone. the sun is a great source of energy!
